See the design options for Kelowna's main street

During a presentation on February 7, the City of Kelowna's consultant, Space2Place presented streetscape design options showing parallel and angle parking scenarios.

What's the difference between the two? Ultimately, it comes down to the width of the sidewalks and how much room is available for street commerce and other place making opportunities.

Final workshop announced

Further to the Bernard Avenue Revitalization update in November, the Downtown Kelowna Association and City of Kelowna have confirmed the last workshop to review the detailed design of the two design options as well as the refined cost estimates.

Date: Monday, February 7
Time: 5:30 to 8:10 p.m.
Where: Royal Anne Hotel, Cutter's Room, 348 Bernard Avenue

An outline of a communications strategy, construction scheduling and next steps will be discussed.

Although it appears quiet on the street, work is continuing in the background on two design scenarios for Bernard Avenue. Visit kelowna.ca/cityprojects under Bernard Avenue Revitalization to find out the latest news. A workshop is being planned for the New Year.

Survey results show strong support for a pedestrian-friendly downtown

The results are in from the online survey and the 15 question poll conducted from June 7 - July 12 reveals some interesting preferences for the downtown core.

Highlights include strong support for a downtown that gives more sidewalk space to pedestrians and retailers. 81 % of responders said they would make downtown a destination more often if its pedestrian spaces were enhanced.

When it came to parking, 64 % said they would not be deterred from visiting downtown if the number of on-street parking stalls were reduced on Bernard by 62 stalls to accommodate more pedestrians and patio space.

The survey also shows 55 % support for the parallel parking scenario that reduces parking stalls on Bernard by 62 spaces in order to make more room for sidewalks.

This will provide a good understanding about what the community wants to see for Kelowna's "Main Street."

The City of Kelowna and Downtown Kelowna Association welcomes your input on the redesign of Kelowna’s Main Street.

The underground utilities and pavement along Bernard Avenue must be replaced within the next few years. Since the street will undergo construction there is an opportunity to beautify and create a pedestrian-friendly place along Bernard Avenue between Richter Street and the Sails.

Utility work is underway in downtown Kelowna on Ellis Street between Leon and Lawrence Avenues. Here's a great example of a retailer's window display during construction. Roy's Shoes is one creative retailer making the most out of construction taking place in front of their business.
